Being able to see after the storm

As I sit here watching the snow storm out my window in March during the season of Lent I am reminded of the beauty Christmas brings to our lives. Some people would talk about the Christmas lights and the glamorous decorations around a home. What I am remembering is the beauty that once again we are reminded of the birth of Jesus. A gift that will never lose its value.
I am also remembering all the images I experienced: the presents and expressions on people faces, the decorations, the endless commercials about sales and we can’t forget the all important lawn inflatables. But the one image that always seems to grab me the most is the creche. Why? Because for me it allows me to once again to be engaged with the story of Jesus. His story has become so important for me and my life. Maybe it is for you as well. This is my hope for you and all who might read my blog.
My faith journey certainly has been a rollercoaster ride. In my early years it seemed like there was no end to the descent. But there finally came a transition, more like a transformation, that moved the coaster into an accent. That climb still has small decents but with much longer accents. For the longest time the roller coaster was more a recognition of God. I knew of God and for the most part I believed in God. But I was not really engaged with Him. Not until someone challenged my awareness of that baby Jesus.
We all have a story, right?! I bet you could sit down right now and write page after page about your life. Where you were born, where you grew up, different types of relationships and many other circumstances that have defined who you are. Jesus has a life story as well. Within his story you can gain a deeper awareness of Him and also of who you are. By understanding his life I have come to understand my own life story. His story talks about all the joys and challenges I have encountered in my life. His life story has helped me through the challenges and appreciate the joys. One of the things that I appreciate about Jesus and his life is that he desires to be part of my life. Gosh, sometimes I just need that in my life.
Jesus in many ways ‘enters’ into people’s lives. Most of the time when he does enter it has a transformative affect. I will be sharing in my blog posts many of his encounters with people that I see a relationship to my own encounters in life. I think I will start with one of my favorite, the blind man Bartimaeus. There are many reasons I can relate to this story but I will share just a few. First and foremost I can relate to the blindness. Though I have never been physically blind I have been blind in many areas of my life but emotionally and spirituality. Have you ever know someone who has had a physical challenge or limitation and they struggled with acknowledging it? You see their temperment and presence is effected by this unwillingness to accept. This is how I can relate to blindness; the unwillingness to see the challenges in my life. I was that way for a very long time with addiction. Twenty four years ago alcohol and drugs was my biggest blindness, accompanied with loneliness, fear, insecurity and many other character flaws. But I was blind.
Then one day, in the turmoil of my pain, someone reached out to me and offered their help. Looking back on the moment in my life it was like Jesus saying to me, “What do you want me to do for you?” The question that Jesus asked Bartimaeus. Look it up Gospel of Mark 10:51. As much as I didn’t want to admit it I did need help in fact I really did desire to be different but I didn’t know how or where to begin. I believe we all desire but may not know how to fulfill the truth of the desire. Even in my pain I searched but I was pursing I false truth. Isn’t it true that there are so many ‘false truths’ people seek only to find emptiness. So you might be wondering what happened to Bartimaeus? Well of course he told Jesus he wanted to receive his sight. Is that what you are seeking, sight? Are you seeking to understand some blindness in your life but having a hard time? “Jesus said to him, ‘Go your way; your faith has made you well.’  And immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.”
I can imagine what you are thinking. Well first I don’t think I have the kind of faith that the blind man had. Well if you read the scripture passage you will see that there wasn’t any qualification to the ‘type’ of faith needed for Jesus to restore his sight. For all we know the faith that the blind man had was smaller than what you have. Jesus’ restoration of my life is determined by my desire to be encountered by him, just like the blind man. The blind man cried out using a title that he could have learned from another person. The restoration I have experienced in my life has been an ongoing journey on ‘the way’ with Jesus just like the blind man. Over this journey my faith has strengthened because of all the other encounters I have had with Jesus. These I will continue to share with you so you can be on the journey with Jesus as well.

Restoring the Junk Yard Car

The Junk Yard Car“A clean heart create for me, God, renew within me a steadfast Spirit.”
-Psalm 51:12

I believe everyone has a time and place in life that makes us wonder if we can come back. I personally have had many challenges in life that made me wish I could just turn back a clock or enter into some time capsule.

Depression, addiction, abuse, loss of a loved one, loss of job or a medical condition that is life altering can affect us both emotionally and physically. These life events can make it seem as if there is not another way to live life anymore. They can make us believe who we are at that moment will remain forever. What I have realized is when I look outside of myself and connect with God, who is present in my life even at those moments, I can move to a place of restoration.

Many years ago, in my early twenties my life reflected a rusty, beaten down junk car. The car would still turn over but it was a very shameful example of the respect you should give to a great possession. My life had come to a place of hopelessness. Then one day the keys to the car were completely lost and therefore couldn’t be used anymore.

A man agreed to come pick up the car to see what he might be able to do with it. Over time he slowly fixed a few things and did the best he could to keep all parts original. The last thing needed was a new key and iginition.

That key changed everything. It brought life back into the car to complete the other work that was done. When in our lives we find ourselves broken, we can be restored. The key I have found is to acknowledge that God is present in my life, even when I feel as if He shouldn’t even be there. He is always there, we are the ones who need to change the key so the connection can be restored.

I have found that it is always about progress, not perfection. When I focus on the progress I am working on with God I can see that my life is being restored in a new way.

“Let us conduct ourselves properly….and put on Jesus Christ” -St Paul

Rediscover Jesus with 5 minutes

Connecting for 5 minutes a day

Statistics vary slightly but Americans are spending a lot of time with electronic devices to connect in some manner. Most likely before you started reading this post you have spent at least 5 minutes on some kind of social media site. In an article from Digitaltrends.com, it states that Americans use their cell phones an average of 4.7 hours a day. WOW!

This short blog post is not about criticizing the amount of time we utilize our electronic devices. In fact my guess some of you right now are using either a cell phone, tablet or computer to read this post. I myself connect with a lot of different people and sites throughout the day for both personal use and work. I have written this post to have us think about ‘when we do connect for 4.7 hours during the day’, are we finding time to connect with God?

Rediscovering Jesus book
You have to try this book! Only 5 mins a day….and it is on Kindle

Kindle has become one of my favorite ways to read now. It is so convenient to be able to read a book that I can highlight, make notes and use clipboard for sections I would like to use as quotes. Now trust me, for about 60% of my books I still have the hard copy as well….There is just something about having the book….So there is a book I would like to recommend that can help you connect with Jesus and only takes 5 minutes a day.

Rediscovering Jesus

This book was giving to me by a very good friend of mine. I show up to work one day and there it was sitting on my desk. My first thought, ‘Oh no, not another book to be reading’. I am always reading two or three books and didn’t think I would have time for another. But what I discovered this book only takes 5 minutes a day. Heck I spend more time looking through Facebook posts then I do reading this book….

Now don’t let this scare you but it has 40 chapters. WAIT! Remember 5 minutes a day. Each chapter is a short write up about how to either reconnect or connect at a different level with Jesus. If you are someone who has tried reading the bible to get to know Jesus and found that too much, read this book! It is a great place to start. Or you might be someone who wants a daily meditation that can helps you connect with Jesus before you begin the day. Read this book!

5 minutes a day with this book for 40 days will change your life. I get it! Everyone’s life journey is different. So I am not sure how it will change you but I am confident it will.  Rediscovering Jesus, a cup of coffee, 5 minutes a day and you will be connecting with something greater than Google can find for you!

Finding Clarity at Christmas

TV Christmas clarity

4K Ultra HD TV’s displays 4x the resolution of Full HD

It seems that each year around Christmas TV manufacturers come out with technology to make picture quality clearer. This year’s newest and greatest being 4K Ultra HD. Their hope is to bring you the best quality picture to improve your experience of television. It is most likely the best time to introduce new technology because people are seeking to find the perfect present and willing to sacrifice a little more during Christmas.

What Clarity are you Seeking?

We all tend to search for some kind of clarity in our lives. At different stages, different moments and even times least expected, clarity is a form of Hope we seek to encounter. Clarity tends to help us understand questions like why or how or when? The clarity TV manufactures are selling is not the type that will help answer the questions our souls seek to find. The resolution of television screens, will not bring the type we seek when trying to understand the meaning for our lives, who is Christ and why should I have more clarity of Him. But the liturgical seasons of Advent and Christmastide can offer a pathway to such clarity and resolution.

…’to discern what is of value’…St Paul – Second Sunday of Advent

How do we know what is the best value? There are many sites on the internet that offer the opportunity to plug in a product you are seeking and will automatically compare price, specifications and even ratings. It almost makes the decision process more difficult and can leave you wondering what is the ‘real’ value I am seeking? Recently St Paul helped us to understand where we should look for the greater value. He said,’ I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it..’ Just as the TV manufacturers seek better clarity in their product, Christ desires you to have a greater clarity of your life in Him. The more you seek him, the more you discover a greater value for your life.

…’one mightier than I is coming.’..John the Baptist – Third Sunday of Advent

When people were thinking John the Baptist was possibly the Messiah they were waiting for, John himself said, ‘one mightier than I is coming’. It was within their hearts that the followers of John the Baptist had a great desire for clarity of who he was. The scripture said, ‘Now the people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts.’ I have always found to discover true clarity we must look within our hearts with great expectation. Advent and Christmas are filled with Expectation and Hope!

“Let us go, then, to Bethlehem to see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.”..Gospel of Luke – Christmas Day

As we all continue to seek clarity in our lives, the Seasons of Advent and Christmas(tide) are special moments in the Church that brings opportunity to re-Discover Christ. A place where you will find a path to Follow Christ that leads to a deeper meaning of life for you. A presence of Christ that will make your heart sing glorious praises so you go forth to Share the great news that Christ is alive in our lives.

Holiday Foot Traffic…Choosing another ‘Door’

The Door“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
Matt 7: 7-8

We have been taught it is respectful to open the door for others, to hold the door for others and allow others to pass through first. Our faith is very much the same.

As disciple’s of Christ we are called, in and through our baptism, to go forth sharing our faith. We do this in many ways especially with people present in our lives; friends, relatives and even sometimes the stranger. Every time we share our faith we open a door.

When you open a door for someone,
you have the opportunity to hold it open.

In faith this can happen through a conversation, an openness of always being there to listen or even with an invitation. When we open a door it is an active invitation for the person to walk through. Pope Francis does this in many ways. In the Year of Mercy document “The Face of Mercy”, he says “May the message of mercy reach everyone, and may no one be indifferent to the call to experience mercy. I direct this invitation to conversion even more fervently to those whose behavior distances them from the grace of God.”

How many times has a door been open for you?

Passing through a door leads you. Many people during this time of year find themselves walking through more doors seeking “Holiday” deals in department stores, grocery stores and specialty shops. What about the door in this picture? There are many reasons to increase your foot traffic through this door during Advent and Christmastide Seasons

Gaze through this door for a moment. What do you see?

When you approach the door maybe you will open it for someone or just maybe someone will be opening the door for you. When you walk through the door bring your questions, tell God what it is that you seek and when you knock on the door may your heart be open to hear His word.

It is through this door that you just might find the best deal in town!
